Director Panneerselvam, a protege of director Lingusamy is releasing his film Renigunta on the 17th February and is confident about it being a super hit in Andhra Pradesh as well.
The film has been released in Tamil in 2009, but will it be relevant now? "It is a universal subject, crime takes place in all countries. I've been inspired by a story that I read in a newspaper and I went about doing research in many areas.
I've dealt with the issue of juvenile crime and went in depth probing reasons as to why they commit crimes and we pose a question to the audience as to what their reaction towards such crimes would be. A few days ago we screened Renigunta in Chennai and all those who saw the film were impressed, particularly V V Vinayak."
Panneerselvam is from Selam, after his studies he worked with Lingusamy as an asistant director and was associated with him from Aanandham, Run, Ji to Sandakozhi and realised it was time to direct. He then prepared a script all for mass heroes, the story was as strong as Okkadu and approached many of them but it didn't materialise. Finally producer Chakravarthy's son Johnny agreed to work and the film turned out to be a massive hit, all the cast and crew were debutants.
He says, "The first three days, the phone didn't stop ringing. Lingusamy came to see the film and was stunned, the first thing he asked me was where I learnt the taking of the film. Public loves action and films that are close to reality. I did take a risk, by using the title Renigunta in Tamil, my gamble paid off."
About the excessive violence he says he has narrated how juvenile criminals are emerging and how their lives end, it questions the collective conscience of the society so it is justified.
What is his favourite scene? "A group of very young boys plan a murder and kill a person and a bigshot impressed by their work ask him how they could you manage that. The boys do a demo on how the killing was done and that was too good."
The story is the strength of the film, it is two hours fifteen minutes and has been shot in Salem, Madurai and other places. Johnny and Sanusha are few amongst the many lead actors. The director is gearing up to release 18 Vayasu as well.
