May 10, 2007

ANR and Anjali Devi

1957 was a golden year for Telugu film industry as two of the most memorable films - Mayabazar (March 27) and Suvarna Sundari (May 10) - released that year. Both the films earned critical acclaim and commercial success.

Directed by Vedantam Raghavaiah and produced by Adi Narayana Rao (husband of Anjali Devi) under the Anjali Pictures banner, Suvarna Sundari had Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Anjali Devi, Rajasulochana, Relangi and Gummadi in the lead roles.

The shooting of the film was held at Venus Studios, Madras, while the outdoor shooting was held at 'Shimsa' Falls, Mysore.

The then Chief Minister Sanjeeva Reddy was the chief guest at the 100 days function held at Kamal Talkies, Hyderabad, while the then Education Minister Pattabi Rama Rao graced the 100 days function that took place at Sri Saraswati theatre in Vijayawada.

The film, released through Chamria Talkie Distributors headed by Sundar Lal Nahata, set a record at the box-office by celebrating 50 days in 48 centres (considering late release centres too). It completed 100 days in 18 centres (first release-13).
