Chitchat With Krishnam Raju
Rebel Star Krishnam Raju was born at Mogaltur, West Godavari district on 20 January, 1940. His full name is Uppalapati Venkata Krishnam Raju. He is married to Smt. U. Shyamala Devi and they have three daughters. He started his film career with negative roles and later went on to do completely different roles in films. He was elected twice to the Lok Sabha (1998 and 1999). Here is a brief chit-chat with the actor, on the occasion of his 66th birthday.
What do you feel on looking back at your film career spanning over four decades?
It's a great feeling! As a successful actor and producer I have secured a place in the hearts of the people. Apart from that, I feel lucky that I had the opportunity to serve the people as a political leader.
Which films do you consider as milestones in your career?
Apart from 'Krishnaveni' and 'Bhaktakannappa', which were made under the banner of Gopikrishna Movies, 'Manavuri Pandavulu', 'Kakatala Rudraiah', 'Bobbili Brahmanna', 'Tandra Paparayudu', 'Puli Bidda', 'Amaradeepam' and 'Rangoon Rowdy' stand out as milestones in my film career. Released simultaneously, both 'Manavuri Pandavulu' and 'Katakatala Rudraiah' were hits at the box office.
Do you have a godfather in the industry?
No, None in particular. But I am thankful to Kotayya Pratyagatma who introduced me to the industry with the film 'Chilaka Gorinka' (1966). Krishna Kumari, who was already an established actress, played the female lead.
Did you ever try to shed your 'Rebel Star' image?
Though I have donned different roles in different films the audience have failed to recognise me beyond the image of a 'Rebel Star'.
Your comments on Prabhas.
Prabhas became a star with 'Varsham'. He silenced the critics with his performance in 'Chakram'. With 'Chatrapati' he proved he is competent. Both the critics and the audience have loved the film and his performance.
Is there a chance of seeing you both onscreen together?
Yes, why not? We are waiting for the right subject.
You are rarely seen on screen these days - any specific reason?
I have been busy with my political career. If I believe I can do justice to a role, I will act. I am currently shooting for the Nitin-Genelia starrer 'Ram' directed by N. Shankar.
Do you plan to produce any films on your own banner, Gopikrishna Movies?
Yes. We are currently looking at a few subjects.
