Out of 89 films released in 1993, there were eight super hits (
one less than the previous year), seven hits and at least 14 films that broke even.
Super Hits: Major Chandrakanth and Allari Priyudu, both directed by K. Raghavendra Rao, were the biggest hits in terms of money. The latter was the only silver jubilee film that year.
1993 was a good year for Ram Gopal Varma, both as a director and a producer. While Gayam starred Jagapati Babu in a totally new image, Money won Brahmanandam many a new fans.
Nagarjuna had two super hits-Allari Alludu and Varasudu, while Sharath-directed Bava Bavamaridhi [Krishnam Raju, Suman, Jayasudha, Malasri] was a surprise hit. Among small films-only Money and Mayalodu proved major money-spinners.
Hits: Superstar Krishna started his second innings with Pachchani Samsaram, directed by Tammareddy Bharadwaja. Megastar Chiranjeevi's Muta Mesthri, co-starring Meena and Roja, did a pre-release business of Rs. 5 crore, which was a record.
SV Krishna Reddy's first directorial venture Rajendrudu Gajendrudu [Rajendra Prasad, Soundarya] and Guhanathan-directed Paruvu Pratista, produced under the banner of Suresh Productions, were declared hits.
Balakrishna had two releases on the same day (3rd September)-Nippuravva and Bangaru Bullodu, out of which Bangaru Bullodu was a hit.
Actress Madhavi's comeback film Matrudevobhava managed both critical and box office success.
Kodi Ramakrishna-directed Police Lock-up, that saw Vijayashanti in a dual role, did well both in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
