Dubbed Films Are A Big Hit In Tollywood

Dubbed films making it big in Tollywood is not new to Telugu film-goers, but the trend has slowed down over the last couple of years. The reasons may be many, but films dubbed from various South Indian languages, especially Tamil, are doing extraordinary business in Andhra Pradesh. Out of the sixty odd dubbed films released in the year 2005, about ten films made their mark at the box office, with five of them turning out to be hits and another four poised to break even.

The biggest box-office success this year has been superstar Rajnikant's 'Chandramukhi' directed by P Vasu. The film is clearly the biggest box-office hit in the history of Telugu cinema, when we take only dubbed films into account. It has given a shot in the arm to the career of Rajnikant who was going through a somewhat lean patch after a disappointing show with 'Baba'. Jyotika was appreciated for her performance more so because she was pitted against Rajnikant, while the other female lead in the film, Nayanatara, also succeeded in making an impression.

Vikram, who was already a superstar in Tamil, made it big in Tollywood with 'Aparichitudu'. Directed by ace director Shankar, the film racked up huge grosses and was a big hit in Andhra Pradesh than in Tamil Nadu. The film gave a big boost to the sagging career of Sada, the female protagonist of the film.

'Premiste', the debut film of editor-turned-producer Suresh Kondeti, turned out to be a hit with the Telugu film-goers, who were looking for a change from the routine. The lead actress of the film, Sandhya was critically acclaimed for her portrayal of Aiswarya. She has now been signed to play a pivotal role in Pawan Kalyan's forthcoming project 'Annavaram'.

Ghajini (starring Suriya, Asin and Nayanatara) and Manmadha (starring Simbhu and Jyotika) were the other films that really stood out, while Mazaa and Mumbai Xpress couldn't quite make their mark at the box office. We have to wait and see how Aaru and SP Nayak, released recently, fare at the box office. It is no wonder then that dubbed films are now being considered as a safe bet by the upcoming producers in Tollywood.
