Rating: ***.5 (***** Very Good, **** Good, *** Fair, ** Average, * Bad)
Shankar Dada MBBS had music that was not the best Devi Sri ever came up with; at the same time it still got the Telugu viewers humming along to hit numbers like Chaila Chaila and Ye Jilla. Munnabhai, the remake of which is the Shankar Dada series, does not place too much importance on the music and all the songs are more situational than anything else. With choreographer-director Prabhu Deva wielding the megaphone yet again, the music has more importance in the Telugu version.
Good Morning Those who've seen the original 'Lage Raho Munnabhai' will know that the female lead is an RJ who first says 'Gooooood morninnnnngg Mumbai'. So here we have 'Good morning Hyderabad'. With funky beats and a peppy tune, Good morning has electrically modified female voice (Divya), teen maar, shanai (!) and the usual rap. Shankar Mahadevan and Darshan lend their voices to this song and Devi Sri himself penning the lines. ***
Chandamama Chitra and Venu render this romantic number about a new blossoming love and longing to meet all the time. 'Pal Pal...har pal' is the Hindi equivalent of this number, and this version is just as sweet. Bhaskarabhatla penned the lyrics and the song is sweet in totality. ***.25
Bhoogolamantha A song tailor made for Adnan Sami, who has sung 'Ye Jilla' in the earlier Shankar Dada MBBS movie, is one more fun number. The lyrics by Sahiti are not really anything new; Gopika Poornima gives company to Sami with the playback. A conversational song, it's sure to find its place in loud and boisterous weddings and other parties for a long time. ***.5
O Bapu Nuvve Ravali The 'Vandemataram' chorus that came up in the Hindi original finds its place here. The rest of the song is different. Sagar and Devi Sri give their voices to this inspirational song with Suddala Ashok Teja's lyrics. His lyrics are simple, to the point and lovely to say the least. ***.25
Aakalesthe Yana Gupta dances in this much hyped Item Number. Sahiti's lyrics are obviously in keeping with the demands of a song of that category. This should be a treat with two good dancers in it. The song will sound and feel better on screen and is one of the best in the album. The peculiar thing to note is that this sounds uncannily similar to the song 'Nukaliste Mekalu Kastavaa' from the movie 'Yuvaraju'. ***.75
Good Morning (Devi Mix) Devi Sri Prasad holds center stage here. Music, lyrics and playback are all courtesy him. Fun song, fun remix. ***.5
Jagadeka Veeruniki This song is one which everyone will be watching out for-Ravi Teja and Allu Arjun are making an appearance in it. Mano with the playback and Chiranjeevi and Srikanth mouthing dialogues, this song pulls the screenplay forward. The 'Kissing Car' episode is played out with this song in the background. The hugely popular 'Da...Da...Shankar Dada' finds its place again in this song. Dialoges and lyrics by Chandrabose are humorous and set a pace for a repeat hearing. ***.75
Pick of the Album: Aakalesthe and Jagadeka Veeruniki.
Last Word The songs are again not what one really expects. It sounds like a rehash of the earlier movie's numbers, but are above average nonetheless. Devi Sri doesn't disappoint. Chiranjeevi-Devi Sri-Prabhu Deva will be a combination to watch out for, and the songs are good enough to begin with. Most of the numbers, including Good Morning, Bhoogolamantha and Chandamama grow on you and the more you listen, the more you will feel like humming along. Definitely not Devi Sri's best, but pacy, peppy and fun. If this had a report card, the remarks would be 'Can Do Better'.
